Resorts or Independent Campsites? – Which one shall I choose?

Home » Resorts or Independent Campsites? – Which one shall I choose?

You might be struggling to find a site to camp on for your holidays, the question that comes up time and time again is, do I stay on a large resort or shall I book onto an independent campsite? Im hoping we can unravel that a little here and help you find the location best suited to yourself.

First thing to note there are far more independent campsites than there are large resorts so this could feel a little overwhelming especially if you’re not used to searching for them. Large resorts tend to be. little more expensive though do typically come feature packed with a fair few extra amenities, such as; outdoor swimming pool, arcade, sporting activities, fishing, attached to a beach and much more. Most caravan sites also have fields for camping, though not many people know this. So if you know and love a site but want to go camping maybe try this method first if you are unsure.

Those that love camping but want to feel more discreet or want to trek further inland, fear not there are loads of independent sites at your disposal. Independent campsites are great if you have a specific style of camping, some have electric and some don’t. Some have basic amenities and some have the odd extra bits it entirely depends on what you want to make out of your trip.

If you have a specific destination in mind, independent campsites tend to win a little bit here because there are far more of them and you can usually get a site rather close to your end destination of right in the heart of the plans you have put in place.

Indie campsites are my personal favourite as they have very unique selling points, often off the beaten track and can be situated smack bang on a trailer or a route up a mountain which I enjoy! I prefer less people on a site which is what I tend to get and I don’t worry about going in peak seasons as sites tend to be available all year round, albeit fewer than there are during peak camp seasons. There are a lot of farms that like to put their land up for happy campers to come and share the facilities etc and these can be a lovely get away.

One thing I would note is that with a lot of independent sites, please take care when looking at toilet and shower facilities, some sites are wild camp only with no facilities and lots have these facilities included. It is worth checking out the reviews and images of any site before booking regardless as to whether it be a large resort and chain and/or an independent site. Research is very much key… Tailor your experience by rationalising and finding out what you truly want to get from you trip away.

Haven, Campsites.co.uk and Pitchup are all great places to start looking for some holiday destinations to go camping. When you filter down what you actually need these sites can be very good at giving you the best options for choosing your campsite.

I hope this article has shed a little light into what to expect when looking at large resorts or independent campsites and if you have any personal suggestions please don’t be afraid to share them in the comments below.
