Hiking the Long Mynd: A Scenic Circular Walk Through Carding Mill Valley

Starting the Walk from Carding Mill Valley

The Carding Mill Valley and Long Mynd Circular route is one of the best walks in Shropshire, offering stunning moorland views and a rewarding waterfall detour. (If theres water flowing.) If you love scenic UK hiking trails, this National Trust site is a must-visit!

The route begins at the Carding Mill Valley National Trust car park, which is easily accessible from Church Stretton. The well-marked path follows a gentle incline alongside a winding stream, creating the perfect start to a relaxing yet rewarding countryside walk. Just be wary, head out for opening hours as it gets rather busy and parking can be somewhat troublesome if you were to arrive at a later time.

A Worthwhile Detour to Lightspout Waterfall

One of the highlights of this walk is the diversion to Lightspout Waterfall. Instead of sticking to the main circular route, take the marked side trail to this hidden gem first and then you can scramble back up to the top to get right back on track. (Not recommended for those with mobility issues.) The peaceful valley, cascading water, and rugged surroundings make the extra steps well worth it and when the water is flowing you can expect an awesome view of the waterfall.

Reaching Pole Bank – The Highest Point on the Long Mynd

As you climb higher, the rolling hills of Shropshire open up into breathtaking landscapes of the Valley. The Pole Bank summit is the highest point of the Long Mynd, offering panoramic views across the county and beyond. On a clear day, you can see as far as Wales! It is a sight to see for sure.

Completing the Circular Route

Re-joining the main Long Mynd trail, the descent provides sweeping views, heather-covered hills, and a gentle return to Carding Mill Valley. Youll expect to see a fair amount of sheep and some wild ponies on your trek around. The varied terrain keeps the walk enjoyable, with plenty of scenic spots to pause and take in the surroundings.
