Thinking of embarking on a solo adventure? You’re in the right place. Let’s dive into the world of solo travel, exploring its benefits, challenges, and my personal experiences.
I’ve always been a bit of a lone wolf, (take it how you wish) but solo travel was 100% a new frontier for me. While I’d taken short solo trips before, a long-term solo adventure was a different beast entirely.
During 2022, I helped plan a European trip with friends, sadly circumstances changed rapidly, leaving me to travel ultimately alone. Initially, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. However, I soon realised that this was the perfect opportunity for self-discovery (admittedly after a few phone calls were made…), It has been something that I have been yearning after for a long time, and inevitably ended up being one of ‘THE‘ best experiences I have been so lucky to have had in my life.
The Rewards of Solo Travel
I learnt so much about myself and the things I would and wouldn’t do again. It’s a great time to truly take yourself away from the rat race and the everyday life and focus truly on you and the things directly infant of you. Give yourself space and time and great things can truly happen. I achieved;
- Self-reliance: Solo travel empowers you to make decisions and navigate challenges independently.
- Personal growth: It’s a chance to step outside your comfort zone and discover hidden strengths.
- Flexibility: You can tailor your itinerary to your preferences and interests.
- Connection: Hostels and shared accommodations offer opportunities to meet like-minded traveler’s.
While embracing the solo journey is incredibly rewarding, it’s not without its challenges. Loneliness, decision fatigue, and cultural barriers can sometimes arise. However, with a positive mindset and a willingness to adapt, these obstacles can be overcome. The one thing about travelling solo is that you are actually never fully alone just don’t be afraid to speak to new people, especially if you feel like you need a bit of company, that’s ok. There are loads of people that also travel in hostels and 70% of them are all solo travellers too which is amazing and also are definitely great for conversations and sharing travelling tips.
My solo journey was a transformative experience. I learned to trust myself, embrace the unknown, and appreciate the simple joys of life. Meeting new people from all walks of life enriched my perspective and created lasting memories and something I will cherish every day.
